The Youth Exchange project titled "Break Free from the Social Media Chains" (Project No: 2024-1-AT01-KA152-YOU-000204201), coordinated by the association FI Gesundheits- und Sportverein and held in Vienna, Austria from 01.12.2024 to 08.12.2024, provided an innovative platform to deeply question the role of the digital world in our lives. Under the leadership of the host organization FI Gesundheits- und Sportverein (E10307737, AT), and in partnership with Livlivi Youth (E10353010, GE) from Georgia, Asociatia de Geopolitica, Relatii Internationale si Diplomatie (AGRID) (E10052150, RO) from Romania, ACADEMIA (E10353335, PL) from Poland, and Dijital Güvenlik Toplulugu (E10259377, TR) from Turkey, young participants gathered to take a collective stand against social media addiction. This international event aimed to empower youth to use digital tools more safely, harmoniously, and purposefully, while successfully building a global awareness network through non-formal educational methodologies.
The "Global Social Media Landscape" and "Global Impact Canvas" sessions, led by the Polish team, enabled participants to explore global social media laws, regulations, and access restrictions. Utilizing Individual Research-Based Learning and Indirect Punishment-Based Learning methodologies, the youth examined the positive and negative impacts of digital bans on societal Behavior Features through symposiums and precise analysis methods. Right after, the Georgia-moderated "Workshop-Magnet Design" shifted focus away from digital interfaces, channeling energy into Creativity and Using Your Imagination. While crafting tangible magnets, participants actively engaged in Activity-Based Learning, discovering the value of self-expression, mutual support, and establishing genuine human connections beyond the confines of social networks.
One of the most impactful milestones of the project was the "Detox Day" activity led by Austria, where participants' phones were collected for nearly 4 hours to experimentally observe the absence of social media. Through Participatory Learning and Comparison Methods, the youth analyzed their physical and mental reactions to digital deprivation within a Cooperative Learning environment. The Romanian-led session "Overcoming Social Media Addiction" offered healthy coping mechanisms and practical tips, enhancing Foresight Capacity and learning motivation through purposeful sampling models. Additionally, the Polish team orchestrated the "Social Media Reflection Circle," leveraging the Intuitive Method along with Intensive & Interactive Listening. In this circle, participants guessed specific social media platforms hidden on their backs and openly shared their personal memories, successfully transforming individual habits into collective realizations.
The administrative spine of the project rested on "Meeting with Leaders" and "End of Day Evaluation" sessions, prompting youth to monitor their personal growth through Self-Judgment Capacity, self-efficacy experiences, and Emotion-Based Learning. During "A Global Showcase," nations introduced their cultural heritages via cooperative learning, interactive presentations, and Demonstration Methods, systematically breaking down cultural prejudices through the Experiential Learning Method. In the Georgian-led "Unplugged Perspectives" workshop, Verbal Cue-Based Learning and Making Comments skills were used to contemplate a world completely untouched by social applications. Meanwhile, the Turkish team initiated "Digital Dialogues: Romeo's Online Odyssey," where participants creatively adapted the classic tragedy of Romeo and Juliet into the modern digital age, integrating Active Learning and pure imagination into a literary masterclass.
In the final phase, the Austrian-led session "Navigating the Psychological Impact of Social Media" thoroughly analyzed mental wellness challenges, such as inadequacy feelings, using Visual & Audio Learning Styles to cement solutions. Countering sedentary digital lifestyles, the Polish team coordinated "Step into Wellness" brisk walks, which enhanced brain health and interaction via the Trip-Based Learning Method and physical Brain Boost activities. This was perfectly complemented by Georgia's "Effective Strategies for Social Media Use" presentation, which guided youth on converting screen time into proactive tools using Idea Management and audience mapping strategies. Concluding with the powerful "Social Dilemma Documentary," participants used Perceptive-Based Learning and profound Brainstorming to analyze data capitalism, ensuring they departed Vienna not merely detached from their digital chains, but transformed into analytical, conscious, and resilient digital citizens.
