Breaking the Digital Chains: Youth Exchange and Media Balance in Vienna

The Erasmus+ Youth Exchange project titled "Break Free from the Social Media Chains" (Project No: 2024-1-AT01-KA152-YOU-000204201), held in the captivating city of Vienna, Austria, between 01.12.2024 and 08.12.2024, challenged the greatest addictions of the digital era. Hosted and organized by FI Gesundheits- und Sportverein (E10307737, AT), the project brought together diverse participants from Livlivi Youth (E10353010, GE) from Georgia, Asociatia de Geopolitica, Relatii Internationale si Diplomatie (AGRID) (E10052150, RO) from Romania, ACADEMIA (E10353335, PL) from Poland, and Dijital Güvenlik Toplulugu (E10259377, TR) from Turkey to analyze the profound impacts of social media on our lives. Throughout an intensive week, attendees not only established strong cross-cultural bonds but also developed innovative methodologies centered around conscious technology consumption.


The "Meet Event" and "Orientation Activity" conducted during the initial days facilitated seamless integration among participants and helped them adapt to Vienna. Interactive icebreakers utilizing colored balls stimulated effective dialogue and activity-based learning while significantly enhancing both physical and mental reflex skills. Through orientation and lecture-based education led by the Austrian team, youth explored the city's cultural texture and gained a clear vision of the project's framework by leveraging visual, verbal, and reading-based learning styles. These introductory steps ensured a safe, structured, and harmonious environment, laying a solid foundation for the subsequent days.


The sessions "Embracing Digital Balance" and "Technology Balance Assessment," organized under the leadership of Georgia and Romania, formed the core of academic and introspective inquiry. While the global dimensions of social media addiction were highlighted through statistical analyses and precise questioning techniques, the implementation of reinforcement methods ensured the long-term retention of knowledge. Utilizing anonymous survey and exploration methodologies on the final day, participants objectively evaluated their digital habits with critical self-reflections. Active participation empowered each young person to analyze their tech consumption patterns and discover tailored paths toward achieving a healthier digital balance.


The social dynamics of the project were heavily enriched during the "Cross-Cultural Pronunciation Exchange," "Cultural Night," and the Polish-led "Erasmus Plus Information Activity." Energetic linguistic games involving global brand pronunciations triggered imitation-based learning and comparative reflection, celebrating phonetic diversity. The performance of traditional dances and the sharing of societal taboos fostered cultural cohesion through social learning models and indirect motivation. Furthermore, case studies, debate-based learning, and the simulation and individuation methods utilized within the "Exploring Social Media Impact" workshop enabled every youngster to contribute their unique life stories, amplifying social dialogue.


In the closing phases, the "Youthpass Activity," "Meeting with Leaders," and the "End of Day Evaluation" played a vital role in validating learning outcomes and projecting them into the future. Through structured presentations and analysis methods led by Georgia, youth mapped their 8 key competencies onto their professional profiles, while a symposium format allowed experienced peers to share the tangible benefits of the certificate. Daily evaluations grounded in self-judgment capacity, self-efficacy experiences, and emotion-based learning allowed participants to monitor their progress. Ultimately, the collaborative solutions devised in leaders' meetings guaranteed that all participants left Vienna not only having shattered their digital chains but also equipped with robust leadership skills and a heightened sense of global awareness.
